My colleague Dan DeFrancesco wrote an excellent college notebook piece on former Scarsdale softball standout Kaitlin Silkowitz:

SilkowitzThere are few guarantees in sports, but Kaitlin Silkowitz (photos from amherst.edu) taking the field for Amherst’s softball team has been one of them over the past four years.

The Scarsdale graduate has started every game for the Jeffs midway through her senior season. Entering Saturday’s doubleheader against visiting Middlebury, Silkowitz has started in 122-straight games.

“Everyone comes to college hoping to play,” Silkowitz said. “No one really hopes to be sitting on the bench. Of course, I’m extremely lucky that I’ve been able to have opportunities in every game to contribute something to the team.”

It’s not a matter of just being on the field every game for Silkowitz. As a freshman she batted .298 and led the team in stolen bases (12). The following season saw Silkowitz once again lead the team in stolen bases (21), in addition to runs (46), while batting .379. As a junior Silkowitz earned first-team All-NESCAC honors after leading the conference in batting average (.478) and on-base percentage (.524).

“Our team has really gone through a lot over these last four years,” Silkowitz said. “More than just starting every game, it’s been really fun to see how great we’ve become. Our program has excelled so much in the past four years.”

This season Silkowitz, who was named NESCAC softball player of the week, is once again atop the conference with a .500 batting average as she has helped Amherst to an 11-3 record. She also is second in the conference in stolen bases (seven).

“I think part of the success for me is just staying in the moment and having confidence,” Silkowitz said.

Additional achievements: St. Thomas Aquinas’ Samantha McDonald (Clarkstown South, New City) was named to the ECC’s honor roll for softball.
